At Kingston Dental we consider tooth extraction to be a last resort. We always do everything we can to maintain your natural teeth. Unfortunately however, we sometimes have no other option but to remove a tooth.
Some of the more common reasons for extraction include:
- Wisdom tooth removal
- Tooth Overcrowding
- Infection
There are two types of extraction:
- A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth. General dentists commonly do simple extractions – loosening the tooth with an elevator and then using a forceps to remove the tooth.
- A surgical extraction is more complex. This may be required if a tooth has broken off at the gum line or has not yet come into the mouth (wisdom tooth).
If extraction is necessary, the dentist will be able to talk you through some of the options for a permanent replacement such as an implant.
